The day Charlie Kirk would have celebrated his 32nd birthday, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor.

The service took place in the newly-renovated White House Rose Garden, according to Fox News.

Erika Kirk, clad in a black mourning dress, the widow of Kirk, delivered weeping remarks about her husband’s legacy and life. In a riveting moment, she said she had asked her 3-year-old daughter what she would like to say to her father for his birthday.

‘“Happy birthday daddy,’” she said the girl’s message read. “I want to give you a stuffed animal. I want you to eat a cupcake with ice cream. And I want you to go have a birthday surprise. I love you,’ it’s what she said.”

Slain on Sept. 10 as he was speaking to a crowd at Utah Valley University, Kirk died after he was shot in the neck. It was Trump who announced his death hours after the attack—a day later he declared he would award the conservative activist with the Medal of Freedom.

“Today, we’re here to honor and remember a fearless warrior for liberty, a beloved leader who galvanized the next generation like nobody has ever seen before, and an American patriot of the deepest conviction, the finest quality and the highest caliber, the late, great Charlie Kirk,” Trump said. “Five weeks ago, our nation was robbed of this extraordinary champion.”

“We will always be here for you. And we’re always going to be here for your gorgeous, beautiful children,” Trump said. Kirk is survived by his wife and their two young children.

“We’ll never forget what your family has sacrificed for our country,” Trump said.

On Tuesday, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), the organization founded by Charlie Kirk, posted “31 Ways to Live Like Charlie Kirk” to honor him on his birthday.

“In honor of Charlie Kirk’s 31 years on Earth, here are 31 ways to live like him,” the organization posted about its founder.”
