Calling the alleged attacker of two National Guardsmen an “animal,” President Donald Trump ordered the immediate deployment of an additional 500 more troops to patrol Washington D.C.
“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both critically wounded, and now in separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price,” Trump wrote on a post on Truth Social. “God Bless our National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly great people.”

The Trump administration rapidly ordered 500 more National Guard members to Washington following the shooting. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said President Donald Trump asked him to send the additional soldiers.
The troop deployment is a response to the attack against two members of the West Virginia National Guard who were shot Wednesday in Washington, D.C., close to the Farragut Metro Station and within walking distance of the White House, authorities have confirmed.
Fox News reported that Kash Patel, the FBI’s Director and Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser said the Guard members were hospitalized in critical condition. Bowser said they were victims of a “targeted shooting.”

Patrick Morrisey, West Virginia’s Gov. at first said the troops had died, but later corrected the statement to say his office was “receiving conflicting reports” about their condition. The governor’s office did not immediately respond to questions about the attack and the condition of the troops.
A suspect who was in custody also was shot and had wounds that were not believed to be life-threatening, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Currently, there are 2,188 troops deployed and united to the joint task force performing law enforcement maneuvers in the city, according to the government’s latest update.
According to the current law enforcement probe, video surveillance shows that the believed suspect advanced toward the soldiers and pulled out a gun, said another law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
One of the soldiers traded gunfire with the shooter, the official said. Investigators were trying to determine the shooter’s motif, including whether the suspect was aiming at the troops for any concrete reason, the official said, according to AP.
