Though Mexico’s government is against any U.S. intervention, a growing sector in the country is asking for American forces after a popular city mayor was gunned down by an alleged cartel assassin.

The Trump administration is allegedly thinking of sending U.S. ground forces and drones to take out cartel strongholds in Mexico—with or without the Mexican government’s permission.
According to The Daily Wire, if the invasion plans are approved, the American high command would deploy soldiers and intelligence officers to spearhead ground operations in Mexico, hitting kingpins, cartel members, destroying drug labs and dismantling their operations, reported NBC News, citing two current U.S. officials and two former U.S. officials.
“The Trump administration is committed to utilizing an all-of-government approach to address the threats cartels pose to American citizens,” a senior administration official told NBC. The use of American strike forces would be conducted whether the Mexican government approves of it or not.
In Mexico, according to some media outlets in the country, support for an American intervention seems to be on the rise in some quarters, especially after the killing of the mayor of the Mexican city of Uruapan, in the state of Michoacan. Carlos Manzo Rodriguez, who was the outspoken mayor against the cartels and had repeatedly asked for President Claudia Scheinbaum’s help, was gunned down on Sunday.

Scheinbaum blamed the Mexican right and past conservative administrations for the death of Manzo. But the killing of Manzo has drawn the ire of many in Mexico. Frustrated because Scheinbaum’s government seems to be able to do little against the cartels, protestors are calling for U.S. forces to intervene.
Still, Scheinbaum has repeatedly denied that she wants or will permit U.S. forces in Mexico. “We reject any form of intervention or interference. That’s been very clear, Mexico coordinates and collaborates, but does not subordinate itself,” Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said at the time.
The Trump administration has carried out more than a dozen strikes in recent months on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and the Eastern Pacific. President Donald Trump recently confirmed that he’s authorized secret CIA operations on Venezuelan soil.
The State Department designated six of Mexico’s cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in February, opening the door for a crackdown on violence and drug trafficking in the region.
The Department of War didn’t immediately respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment.
