Apparently, the fact that Donald Trump was not on the ballot during Tuesday’s elections affected Republicans, who lost in several key races and measures.
President Trump bemoaned that Democrats nabbed wins in the four major races of this year’s election, saying that he did not think the results were good for the Republican Party or the American public, according to The Washington Times.
“It was not expected to be a victory. I don’t think it was good for Republicans. I’m not sure it was good for anybody, but we had an interesting evening, and we learned a lot,” Trump said at a breakfast with Republican senators at the White House.
“Trump wasn’t on the ballot and the shutdown were the two reasons that Republicans lost elections tonight,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
On Tuesday, Democrats darted to victory in the major races in this year’s election. The most noteworthy one was Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, who won the New York City mayoral race, while Rep. Mikie Sherrill seized the New Jersey governor’s office.
Other election victors include former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, who netted Virginia’s governorship. In California, voters approved Prop 50, an important redistricting ballot measure that favors Democrats.
Trump mentioned unnamed pollsters who credited the Republican losses to the government shutdown and the factor that he was not on the ballot. The current shutdown is now the longest in history.
According to The Times, exit polling demonstrated that voters went to the polls concerned about the economy along with a broader restlessness with the state of the country.
