JD Vance Says He’s Not Confident Russia and Ukraine Will Agree to a Peace Deal

Vice President JD Vance said that he would not say with certainty that America could negotiate a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.

While talking to UnHerd, Vance said that Washington, nonetheless, would “keep on trying to negotiate.”

“I think that we’ve made progress, but sitting here today, I wouldn’t say with confidence that we’re going to get to a peaceful resolution,” the vice president told the publication, according to The Epoch Times. “I think there’s a good chance we will, I think there’s a good chance we won’t.”

Vance’s comments come as the United States continues to have talks individually with diplomats from Russia and Ukraine.

Still, Vance said that the peace talks have gained some ground between both countries. He added that there’s a “real sense of what’s non-negotiable [and] what’s very negotiable.”

“I think the Russians really want territorial control of Donetsk. The Ukrainians understandably see that as a major security problem, [even as] they privately acknowledge that eventually, they’ll probably lose Donetsk—but, you know, eventually. It could be 12 months from now, it could be longer than that,” he said.

Vance said that the Donetsk issue is a “significant hold-up” in the talks, describing it as a “terrible territorial concession.”

But there’s more, Vance said. He pointed out that other themes were dragging out the negotiations, such as control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, what would happen to ethnic Russians in Ukraine and ethnic Ukrainians in Russia-controlled areas, and postwar reconstruction.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump told reporters that the talks were “going along,” but added that there was “tremendous hatred” between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy.

When asked whether he had spoken to either of the leaders, he said, “I will do what I have to do” to end the war, saying that “the bottom line is, I think, they’re all tired of that war. Everyone is tired of that war.”
