In an odd, holiday-related story, three boys from Ohio led patrol officers on a car chase, crashed into a home, and later told police they were worried about how the crime would make Santa Claus not bring them any presents.

According to a story by Fox News, the chase started on Saturday afternoon when a license plate reader notified Newburgh Heights police officers about a Mazda 3 that had been reported stolen in the area, according to a police report.

But when an officer tried to make a traffic stop, the driver of the vehicle took-off. The car ultimately crashed into a home and the three boys inside, ages 8, 11 and 12 — escaped on foot, police said.

Police rapidly caught the kids. The home they crashed into sustained minor damages, the report said.

According to Fox News, the footage obtained from the police bodycam shows two boys near a garage, as one of the officers commands them to the ground. In the distance, a third kid is seen coming closer to his friends after the officer orders him to do so.

“I’m sorry,” one boy is heard saying, in fear. “Can you call my mom?”

Another boy is heard asking: “We’re going to jail? Oh my God.”

“You’re 12-years-old… stealing cars,” the officer is heard saying, after taking the youngster to a police car. “What the hell is wrong with you?”

As it turns out, the boys said they went to a store when they saw a vehicle, authorities said. One boy allegedly said that “something just came over his body and he could not control it; he needed to take the car.”

“All three boys stated that they know right from wrong and admitted what they did was wrong,” the report said. “While in our custody they were concerned about how this would affect Santa coming to bring them presents.”

One boy supposedly told authorities that he was going to “get coal for Christmas” because of what they did, police said.

The boys were released to their parents and guardians.
