Ukraine is receiving a security guarantee by the United States for a period of 15 years as part of a proposed peace plan, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday.

Nevertheless, Zelenskyy said he would rather have an American pledge of up to 50 years to deter Russia from more attempts to seize its neighbor’s land by force. Hosting Zelenskyy at his Florida resort on Sunday, President Donald Trump maintained that Russia and Ukraine are “closer than ever before” to a peace deal, according to a story by Newsmax.

Still, peace negotiators are looking at how both sides can reach a deal on pivotal problems like what forces will have to withdraw from certain areas. Another matter is the Zaporizhzhia, the nuclear plant what is one of the 10 largest in the world and is now occupied by the Russians.

“Without security guarantees, realistically, this war will not end,” Zelenskyy told reporters in voice messages responding to questions sent via a Whatsapp chat.

On the Russian side, Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman said Monday that President Vladimir Putin and Trump were expected to hold talks in the near future. However, there was no hints the Russian leader would speak to the Ukrainian President.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Macron, the President of France said Zelenskyy’s allies will gather in Paris in early January to “finalize each country’s concrete contributions” to the security guarantees.

According to the Ukrainian President, Trump said he would think about extending U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine beyond 15 years. The guarantees would be approved by the U.S. Congress as well as by parliaments in other countries involved in overseeing any settlement, he said.

In addition, Zelenskyy said he wants the 20-point peace plan under discussion to be approved by Ukrainians in a national referendum.

But holding a ballot needs a ceasefire of at least 60 days, and Putin has shown no willingness for a truce without a full settlement.
