Venezuela’s President Said Things are Cordial with Trump

Still, the standoff between both nations worsens.

Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s President, described his most recent phone call with President Donald Trump — where he asked for amnesty in exchange for leaving his nation — as “respectful and cordial,” hoping it would lead to peace with the US.

According to Newsmax, Maduro ended his silence over last month’s call with Trump on Wednesday, saying the short talk was a step towards peace in the face of the discussion chiefly concentrating on a deal to see the Venezuelan strongman step down in exchange for help for him and his family, according to multiple reports.

“If this call means steps are being taken toward a respectful dialogue between our countries, then dialogue is welcome, diplomacy is welcome,” Maduro said during a televised event.

In Caracas, Maduro told reporters that the call took several minutes and included a conversation about the chance of future dialogue, repeating his earlier comments to El País in which he insisted the tone was “respect and cordiality,” even as hostilities with the United States escalate.

White House officials confirmed that Maduro spoke with Trump. Nevertheless, it added that it has not favored Maduro’s depiction of the call or offered its own portrayal of the tone.

By contrast, Trump has reiterated that Venezuelan state actors have enabled “criminal cartels and terrorist affiliates” operating off the country’s coast, and he has vowed publicly that the United States “will not tolerate” these groups’ activities, comments cited in CBS News coverage of Washington’s warnings toward Caracas.

Maduro has countered by accusing Trump of threatening Venezuelan sovereignty, a charge he repeated during a mid-November rally where he brandished a ceremonial sword and vowed to defend “every inch” of the nation, remarks documented by Time magazine last month.
