He’s game.
Elon Musk, the tech magnate and the world’s richest man is indicating a big comeback to the political spectrum, pledging in a social media post on New Year’s Day to subsidize Republican candidates in the 2026 midterm elections. He said he is trying to thwart what he described as the “doom” of the United States.
“America is toast if the radical left wins,” Musk wrote in a post on X. He said that the future of the country and its battle for survival hinges on the results of the 2026 congressional races.

“They will open the floodgates to illegal immigration and fraud. Won’t be America anymore,” Musk said, according to Newsmax.
Musk’s posts seem to imply a pivotal and important move for Musk. The mogul has had a an uneven and roller coaster type of relationship with President Donald Trump. Both men who have collaborated on many high-stakes issues, trading praises and public barbs last year, according to the New York Post.
After functioning as a top alternate during the 2024 campaign and briefly leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) upon Trump’s return to the White House, Musk left the administration in May 2025.
Termed by critics as the “nasty breakup” between Musk and Trump, the fallout was allegedly triggered by the mogul’s steadfast opposition to the “One, Big, Beautiful Bill,” a signature $3.3 trillion spending package that Musk blasted as a “pork-filled abomination” that would explode the national deficit.
In addition, Musk accused Trump of allegedly being on the Bill Epstein files. He also left DOGE, the government entity created by Musk and Trump to investigate illicit government spending.
After the fracas with Trump, Musk threatened to launch the “America Party” during the summer and suggested that the President should be impeached. Nevertheless, recent sightings of the two together, including a clip Musk shared of Trump patting him on the arm in November, suggest a strategic reconciliation aimed at maintaining GOP control of Congress.
The return of Musk to the GOP is no small matter. In fact, critics said it’s a huge deal.
During the 2024 cycle Musk was the nation’s top political donor, shelling out more than $290 million, or nearly $100 million more than any other individual contributor, Newsmax reported. While the precise numbers of his 2026 contributions are unknown until FEC reports are released later this month, sources familiar with the matter indicate that “big checks” have already been cut, reports the Post.
