In a remarkable alteration to the lineup of vaccines recommended for children in the United States, federal officials of the Department of Human Health Services said they are lowering the number of diseases prevented by customary shots from 17 (plus the multiple boosters) to 11.
The changes form a new outline that retains all currently recommended vaccines available and fully covered, while moving various vaccines into a category designed to emphasize shared decision-making between families and clinicians, according to a story by The Defender.
The acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Jim O’Neill revised the agency’s immunization schedule to mirror the changes, effective immediately, officials said at a news briefing.
President Donald Trump praised the updated Childhood Vaccination Schedule, saying it was based upon respectable science, with scientists and experts from all over the world agreeing to it.
“Effective today, America will no longer require 72 “jabs” for our beautiful, healthy children. We are moving to a far more reasonable Schedule, where all children will only be recommended to receive vaccinations for 11 of the most serious and dangerous diseases,” Trump wrote on Truth Social media. “Parents can still choose to give their children all of the vaccinations, if they wish, and they will still be covered by insurance.”
“However, this updated Schedule finally aligns the United States with other Developed Nations around the World. Congratulations to HHS Secretary Bobby Kennedy, CDC Acting Director Jim O’Neil, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, CMS Administrator Dr. Oz, NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya, and all of the Medical Experts and Professionals who worked very hard to make this happen,” Trump wrote. “Many Americans, especially the “MAHA Moms,” have been praying for these COMMON SENSE reforms for many years. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The changes follow the directive by President Trump, who issued a presidential memorandum on Dec. 5, 2025, instructing the agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to review whether other developed nations protect children more effectively, according to the HHS.
After what HHS described as a “comprehensive, evidence-based assessment,” the department determined that the U.S. recommends more habitual childhood vaccine doses than peer countries without attaining higher vaccination rates or greater public trust.
“This decision modernizes the U.S. childhood immunization schedule, protects children from serious disease, and rebuilds trust in public health,” HHS said.
