President Donald Trump refused to fire Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, saying that despite the growing scrutiny around her after the fatal shooting of two civilians by immigration officers in Minneapolis, he has confidence in her.
“I think she’s done a very good job,” Trump said as he departed the White House, according to Newsmax. “The border is totally secure.” When asked by a reporter if Noem would resign or be forced out of her Cabinet post, Trump replied, “No.”
A former governor of South Dakota, Noem has faced mounting condemnation after the Saturday shooting death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti during a federal law enforcement operation in Minneapolis.
Countering the controversy, Trump on Monday deployed White House border czar Tom Homan to take charge of immigration law enforcement operations in Minnesota. Those efforts had previously been overseen by Noem and Gregory Bovino, the administration’s Border Patrol commander.

Catholics for Catholics honored Homan last week by bestowing on him the Protector of America Award, for his effort in rescuing more 62,000 missing children – a number which has now been updated to 129,000. Homan is a committed Catholic.
Reportedly, the White House has been working on a publicity campaign after the death of Pretti. According to the New York Times, Trump met with Noem in private for two hours on Monday.
Still, various Democrat members of Congress have called for Noem’s impeachment, citing worries over the use of excessive force by immigration officers and the administration’s law enforcement tactics.
Pretti’s death was the second fatal shooting involving federal immigration authorities in Minneapolis in less than three weeks. Earlier this month, Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed by ICE agent Jonathan Ross while inside her vehicle, which authorities said she was using to block an ICE operation.
