A man is facing a felony charge and potential deportation after a fatal crash in Miami-Dade’s rural Redland area over the weekend, leaving a mother and father heartbroken.
The crash took place along Southwest 320th Street, near 202nd Avenue, at around 7:25 p.m. Sunday. Detectives with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said Erick Rolando Chan-Guarcas, 30, of southwest Miami-Dade, was driving a Chevrolet Silverado and swerved into the opposite lane, hitting a Honda Accord driven by Cherry Recuero.
Medics airlifted Recuero, 26, to Jackson South Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, deputies said.
Sheriff deputies said they determined that Chan-Guarcas, a Guatemalan national, “had never received a Florida driver’s license” and was in the country illegally. Chan-Guarcas, who was also hurt in the crash and taken to Jackson South, was arrested on a felony charge of driving without a license causing death.
Veronica Flamenco, Media Director for Catholics for Catholics, grieved the death of Recuero, who is a friend of the family. Cherry was the only daughter of Vicente and Jeannette.
La hija única de una amiga muy querida falleció este pasado domingo en un accidente automovilístico fatal en la Florida. Univisión reportó el caso diciendo que "su vehículo fue impactado por una camioneta y que el conductor manejaba sin licencia."

After seeing a news report by local Univision affiliate, Noticias 23, Flamenco noticed that the report omitted some key details about Chan-Guarcas.
“It seems that @Univision23 prefers to omit half the facts to protect the individual’s identity instead of presenting the reality of things as they are,” Flamenco said.
“The pickup truck was driven by Erick Rolando, an undocumented immigrant without a license, who was driving drunk and is now in immigration custody,” Flamenco said. “Then there are protests about the deportation of these kinds of individuals who only come to this country to cause tragedy… He took the life of a young woman and has devastated her parents, who are completely heartbroken.”
Flamenco said, “I ask you to pray for the eternal rest of Cherry Recuero’s soul and for the comfort of her parents, Janeth and Vicente.”
Jeannette Recuerdo, a faithful Catholic, said, “My daughter leaves a fire in our hearts, in our home, and in everyone who knew her. The pain is too intense for us.”
Still, the Recuero’s say that though their hearts are broken, there is still room for forgiveness.
“We forgive him. As hard as it sounds, as crazy as it may seem, we forgive him, Vicente Recuero said. “He took away the most precious thing we have. The apple of our eye.”
