Looking to ease tensions and a possible American military intervention in Mexico that to many international observers seems imminent, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Monday said she had a “good conversation” with U.S. President Donald Trump on security and efforts to reduce drug trafficking.
For weeks, Trump has said that it is the cartels, not Scheinbaum or her administration, who are really running Mexico and that this has worsened the fentanyl problem in the U.S. Trump has suggested that American forces could do land strikes to vanquish organized crime, which has only worsened under the current and previous president.
Trump’s comments were the latest in a series of increasing warnings to send a U.S. military force against drug cartels within Mexican territory. Besides the war with Mexico in the 19th Century, U.S. forces have invaded the country twice, in 1914 with the occupation of the port of Veracruz and in 1916, when American forces went into Mexican territory, trying to capture Pancho Villa.

Nevertheless, Sheinbaum said on X the two leaders spoke about security with respect for Mexico’s sovereignty, lowering drug trafficking, as well as trade and investment, according to Newsmax.
In addition, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke on Sunday with Mexican Foreign Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente about the need for stronger cooperation to take down Mexico’s violent narco-terrorist networks and stop the trafficking of fentanyl and weapons, department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
In her post on X, Scheinbaum said that “collaboration and cooperation within a framework of mutual respect always yield results.”
