A defiant President of Colombia warned Donald Trump on Monday that he will not be the next Nicolas Maduro and that Colombians will defend his persona against an “invader.”
Also, Gustavo Petro countered President Trump’s rhetoric, saying he’s “not illegitimate” or “a narco,” according to a story by Newsmax.
On Monday, Petro posted on X, saying he is the constitutional “supreme commander” of Colombia’s military and police and accused U.S. officials, especially Secretary of State Marco Rubio, of being given “false information” by Colombian political interests he claimed are linked to the mafia.
Petro has been at odds with Trump, with his words towards the American President becoming pricklier after the spectacular capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro by U.S. forces. When asked about a possible bellicose action against Colombia, Trump answered, “sounds good to me.”
Trump has accused Petro of facilitating cocaine production and trafficking to the United States — an accusation Petro rejected. The Colombian leader reiterated his government performed record seizures and was lowering coca growth through crop substitution programs.
In addition, Petro insisted he has commanded the removal of intelligence colonels for supposedly providing bogus claims “against the state” and urged Rubio not to believe “fallacies.”
Still, Petro sounded defiant in his post. He forewarned that if the U.S. decided to detain Colombia’s elected president, it could “unleash the popular jaguar.”

He also threatens to UNLEASH the "popular jaguar" if the US military steps foot on their soil 😭

The Colombian President is instructing the country’s security forces to give priority to the national flag over any foreign allegiance and said the public force must defend “popular sovereignty.”
Petro went as far as suggesting he himself would take up arms again “for the homeland,” despite swearing off weapons after a peace pact decades ago.
By contrast, Trump sent a clear, stark message to Petro while talking to reporters on his early Saturday morning takedown order against Maduro.
Trump said Petro needs to “watch his a**.”
