President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that he was withdrawing the United States from the bedrock international agreement that forms the basis for countries to rein in climate change.
The treaty, which has been in place for 34 years, counts all of the other nations of the world as members.
The United States will pull out from the Global Climate Agreement, the international pact that has served as the footing for international efforts to rein in environment change.
The treaty includes every other nation in the globe, making it one of the most widely adopted international frameworks still in force, according to a story by Newsmax.
In addition, the White House said President Trump signed a memorandum directing the U.S. to leave 66 international organizations and treaties that “no longer serve American interests.”
However, the White House did not make public a complete list of the organizations and agreements covered by the order, but stressed that climate agreement was a major factor.
Trump and his advisers framed the exiting as part of a larger push to take back control of U.S. energy and economic policy and reduce what they view as outside constraints on domestic industry.
The Trump administration’s decision is expected to provoke a swift backlash from U.S. allies and climate advocates who contend that the agreement is key to coordinating emissions cuts and financing climate adaptation.
The withdrawal could debilitate a global impetus as countries face increasing climate-related disasters, including extreme heat, flooding, and wildfires.
But supporters of the action commended it as a refusal of international bureaucracy and what they call an unfair system that imposes lopsided costs on the United States.
