For the second time, the U.S. leaves the agreement.

The United States has officially left the 2015 Paris climate agreement, concluding President Donald Trump’s vow to withdraw from the global pact he has branded “very unfair” to America.
On his first day in office in 2025, Trump pulled the U.S. from the agreement, though the withdrawal required a one-year waiting period under the pact’s rules, according to Newsmax. However, the United Nations confirmed last year that the U.S. exit would take effect on Jan. 27, 2026.
America is now the only nation to have left the Paris Agreement twice.
Contending that it imposed unfair burdens on American workers and businesses, the President withdrew from the accord in his first term. But then-President Joe Biden would later come back to the agreement, a move Trump criticized before reversing it again.
“Thanks to President Trump, the U.S. has officially escaped from the Paris Climate Agreement which undermined American values and priorities, wasted hard-earned taxpayer dollars, and stifled economic growth,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said in a statement. “This is another commonsense America First victory for the American people.”

The agreement encourages countries to set goals to lower greenhouse gas emissions, but the critics say that the accord imposes harsh rules on the U.S., while letting polluters from other countries avoid them and get away with it.
Now that the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement is done, the U.S. is among the few countries without an official aim of lowering climate emissions. In addition, it underscores a bigger move away from international climate policy.
The administration has criticized foreign governments for pursuing renewable energy mandates and has warned of tariffs on countries that support carbon taxes on shipping.
The U.S. has also terminated international aid meant to help poorer countries address rising seas and climate-related risks.
The administration is also pursuing an exit from the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, a separate treaty that promotes global cooperation on climate policy.
