A Texas County Commissioner who was looking to designate part of a road as a memorial to Charlie Kirk, tabled the plans on Monday.

According to The Washington Times, David Glass, the Bastrop County Commissioner and a Republican, last month introduced a resolution for the Texas Legislature to support designating the stretch of FM 969 from the county line to State Highway 71 as the Charlie Kirk Corridor in the next legislative session.

But during the Bastrop County Commissioners Court meeting on Monday, Glass tabled the plan before action could be taken after receiving emails from constituents.

“Two-thirds of them were from very considerate constituents asking me to postpone the vote and/or to reconsider the resolution. I felt that I would honor their request. I replied to every email myself. The other 1/3 were very hateful with threats, etc. … It was to never rename the road but rather [make it a] memorial designation,” Mr. Glass told the Austin American-Statesman.

According to The Times, memorial designations do not change the official name of a road and cannot be put in place by county officials. That’s why the proposed resolution put the responsibility on state legislators, who do have the power to give roads memorial designations.

Glass also told The Times that he does not plan to introduce the resolution again.

Kirk was the founder of Turning Point USA, the political conservative organization who aimed at creating a youth movement. An assassin shot him dead at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 in the middle of an outdoor event on campus.

Prosecutors are accusing Tyler Robinson, 22, of killing Kirk. Robinson is facing seven charges, including aggravated murder.

If a court finds Robinson guilty of killing Kirk, a judge could levy the death penalty.
