Many users on social media are wondering if the COVID-19 vaccinations might be linked to operations like Artichoke.

A seven-page CIA document titled “Special Research for Artichoke” that was originally declassified in 1983 is getting a new wave of attention on social media as users speculate if lone gunmen and others, particularly those involved in assassination attempts or mass shootings, have been victims of federal mind control programs. Project Artichoke ran from 1951 to 1956, and in 2002, the CIA openly admitted that the project operation existed.

A New York Times article from 1978 unveiled that Artichoke and other projects were enacted “to find out whether a person could be secretly induced to commit an assassination against his will.” The article also noted that:

Several groups have studied the documents from the standpoint of whether they may provide any evidence in the continuing inquiries into the assassination of President Kennedy or the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Members of a nonprofit group, the Assassination Information Bureau, said that the security officer for the “Artichoke” project, Sheffield Edwards, was later the C.I.A. man assigned to form the assassination team that made attempts on the life of Prime Minister Fidel Castro of Cuba.

The author of the document states that some of the proposals “are controversial.” Some methods are meant for “direct use on subjects” while others are intended for in-direct or long-range approach.” This indirect approach “could be administered over a considerable period of time” and be placed in food, water, sodas, beer, liquor, and cigarettes, and also used in “standard medical treatments such as vaccinations.”

The document outlines several methods to try and induce mind control into subjects, including: chemicals, drugs, gases, aerosols, high and low pressures, sound, bacteria, plant cultures, fungi, poisons, diet and dietary deficiencies, electroshock, electro-narcosis, sleep-inducing machines, lobotomies and other brain surgeries, glaring lights and colors, and psychological manipulation.

Techniques of psychological manipulation discussed include moving or vibrating rooms, distorted rooms, the deliberate creation of an anxiety condition, the creation of panic, fear, or the exploitation of established phobias, the effect of heat and cold, the effect of dampness or dry air, general disorientation, and completely soundproof areas.

Artichoke would have been a precursor to MK Ultra, another CIA project focused on mind control. The methods were often tested on unwitting subjects like prisoners, university students, and patients at hospitals. Mob boss Whitey Bulger was a victim of this testing while an inmate at the Atlanta penitentiary system in 1957.
