The historic Saint-Paul Church, built between 1910 and 1911, was destroyed in a fire early Monday morning.
The church, still owned by the Diocese of Montreal, had not celebrated Mass in several years but had become part of a community center which included a food bank and a residence for senior citizens. Almost 150 people in the surrounding area, including the senior citizen residents, had to be evacuated, and all of the food as well as two recently purchased commercial freezers were lost to the fire.
At least 100 firefighters were dispatched to respond to the five-alarm fire, and the cause is still under investigation, although the Catholic Civil Rights League has stated that members of the community believe it was arson.

Thankfully, there were no injuries reported.
Attacks on churches in Canada, particularly Catholic ones, have significantly increased over the past few years.
This parallels the wave of attacks on Catholic churches in America; since May 2020, more than 500 Catholic churches in the United States have been vandalized, burned, desecrated, or had sacred statues destroyed.
Gen. Mike Flynn, a Catholic, recently shared a video in which he pointed out the media’s lack of coverage of the targeting of Catholic churches. In the United States, Flynn said, the president must win the Christian vote and particularly, “you must get the Catholic vote – the largest voting bloc in the United States of America are Catholics – and yet we don’t hear about it.”
Thank you to @GenFlynn for speaking up on the persecution of Catholics and their sacred temples of worship. We must protect what we love or we will lose it. “My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of thieves.’” Mt 21
