During the last decades, he has been shunned, satanized by progressives as the worst villain the Americas have ever had, bringing death, pestilence and violent conquest to the New World.
But now, President Donald Trump is defending the figure of Christopher Columbus and his Catholic heritage from “left-wing arsonists,” by planning to install a statue of the 15th Century explorer on White House grounds. “The decision marks a major victory for the preservation of American history and a direct rebuke of the radical activists who spent years trying to erase the 15th-century explorer from the public square,” according to an article published by The Daily Wire.
In an article published by Catholics for Catholics called “Christopher Columbus: Messenger of Catholicism and Discoverer of the Americas,” Columbus is recognized as a true Catholic hero, who despite his flaws, was a pivotal hero who changed the course of history and was a monumental victory for Christianity.
“History revisionists today focus solely on the flawed aspects of his governorship of Hispaniola, a Caribbean island, and disregard in full his heroism,” said the article. “Of course, both his accomplishments and flaws should be understood. Imperfection is a rule, not an exception, amongst human beings as we were born with original sin. But his flaws do not erase his heroism, rooted in his zeal for Catholicism.”

The Columbus statue, scheduled to be placed on the south side of the White House grounds, is a reconstruction of a monument originally unveiled by President Ronald Reagan in Baltimore. In 2020, during the height of the George Floyd riots, a mob toppled the original sculpture and dumped it into Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
A group of Italian-American businessmen and local sculptors who recovered the broken pieces from the harbor restored the Columbus statue. Bill Martin, who helped lead the recovery effort, noted that the statue represents the “American spirit of daring and defiance.” For the Italian-American community, the return of Columbus to a place of honor is a significant cultural win.
In the past, Columbus was demonized for years by political democratic leaders like former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and former Vice President Kamala Harris (Harris described the explorer’s voyage to America as a “shameful past” and a “wave of devastation.” But the Trump administration is making it clear that the times of acting contrite for Western civilization is in the past.
“In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero,” spokesman Davis Ingle said. “And he will continue to be honored as such by President Trump.”
