In the first signs of possible peace talks between Iran and the U.S., President Donald Trump on Monday said his administration was talking with a “respected” Iranian leader and claimed Tehran was eager for a truce to end the war.
Trump told the media that Iran wants “to make a deal,” and said U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner had sustained talks with an Iranian leader Sunday.
“We have had very, very strong talks. We’ll see where they lead. We have points, major points of agreement. I would say almost all points of agreement,” Trump told reporters.
“The discussions took place yesterday. They went into yesterday evening. They want very much to make a deal. We’d like to make a deal, too. We’re going to get together today, probably by phone.”
Trump did not mention who was talking for Iran but said the U.S. has not spoken to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
“We’re dealing with the man who I believe is the most respected and the leader. You know, it’s a little tough. We’ve wiped out everybody.
If a deal is made, Trump said the U.S. would take Iran’s enriched uranium, which is crucial to its disputed nuclear program. Tehran has stubbornly refused such demands in the past, insisting it has the right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
President Trump said Monday he was giving Iran a five-day reprieve from his threat to destroy its power infrastructure, pointing to new talks with Tehran he believed could broker a deal that would resolve the conflict https://t.co/8wRa7vU6pb pic.twitter.com/fdrNOpYgQf

“We want to see no nuclear bomb, no nuclear weapon, not even close to it. We want to see peace in the Middle East. We want the nuclear dust. We’re going to want that. And I think we’re going to get that. We’ve agreed to that,” Trump said.
But Iranian state media quoted Iranian officials as rejecting any such talks, and said Trump had backed down “following Iran’s firm warning.”
Still, Trump told reporters Iran started the latest round of talks.
“So, they called. I didn’t call; they called. They want to make a deal. And we are very willing to make a deal. It’s got to be a good deal. And it’s got to be no more wars, no more nuclear weapons. They’re not going to have nuclear weapons anymore. They’re agreeing to that,” Trump said.
