BREAKING: Rep. Thomas Massie Asks for Congressional Review of Catholic’s Termination from Religious Liberty Commission

Articles | March 13, 2026 | by Catholics for Catholics

On Friday, Congressman Thomas Massie issued a letter to Reps. Jim Jordan and James Comer, chairmen of the Judiciary and Oversight committees, respectively, asking for a congressional review of the removal of Catholic Carrie Prejean Boller from the White House’s Religious Liberty Commission.

In sharing a copy of the letter, Massie wrote on X:

Religious Liberty Commission member @CarriePrejean1 was reportedly removed for making statements that mirror remarks from the Pope.

Removing members for religious viewpoints undermines the very purpose of the Commission.

I’m asking two Congressional committees to review.

Massie’s letter opens by stating the original purpose of the Religious Liberty Commission:

As you are likely aware, President Donald J. Trump created the Religious Liberty Commission by Executive Order (EO) on May 1, 2025.1 The intent of that order was clear: to ensure religious voices and viewpoints remain welcome in the public square and that Americans may “freely exercise their faith without fear or government censorship or retaliation.”2 It is therefore both ironic and concerning that the Commission elected to expel Mrs. Caroline Prejean Boller on February 11, 2026, due to her expressing Catholic religious viewpoints leading up to and during the fifth hearing of the Religious Liberty Commission, on February 9, 2026, at the Department of Justice.

Massie explains that Boller had previously been directed by a federal representative of the commission, Ms. Mary Margaret Bush, “that she could no longer repost or reiterate” statements on social media perceived as critical of Israeli government action or Christian Zionist ideology due to the statements being “antisemitic.”

Boller was pressured to resign from the commission, and received an additional call from Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Pastor Paula White “ordering Mrs. Boller to either refrain from all social media usage, or at a minimum, to cease all reiterations of papal statements perceived as critical of the Israeli government, and, according to the White House and certain Commission members, antisemitic.”

Ahead of the February 9 hearing, which Boller participated in, “Mrs. Boller claims she was compelled to participate in an ‘intervention meeting’ consisting of Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Pastor Paula White, Dr. Ben Carson, and Ms. Brittany Baldwin.” Massie continues,

“During this meeting, Mrs. Boller was, again, pressured to abstain from asking questions or expressing views critical of the Israeli government, from expressing rejection of Christian Zionism, and from using the term ‘genocide’ in reference to events in Gaza.”

Apparently the Commission’s Designated Federal Officer was not present at this intervention, a violation of federal law.

Massie notes that Boller also tried to invite prominent Jewish Americans, including rabbis, as well as Palestinian Christians to the meeting, but was rejected. He closes the letter with the following:

Given the serious questions raised by the removal of a presidentally appointed commissioner, allegations of pressure to limit certain viewpoints, and concerns about the range of perspectives permitted in the Commission’s proceedings–particularly where the remarks at issue reflect statements made by religious authorities such as the Pope–congressional review is warranted to determine whether the Commission is operating consistent with the independence and balance required under FACA.

Carrie Prejean Boller will be receiving a Catholic Champion Award at the Catholic Prayer for America event on the Feast of St. Joseph.
