Officials from Iran accused the United States of a “false flag incident” after a report appeared this week that Tehran was potentially preparing a drone attack on California.

Ismail Baghaei, Iran’s Foreign Minister spokesman posted about the report on X on Thursday afternoon, writing “Is this a prelude to another ‘false flag’ incident?”

But the White House said the report was grounded on an unverified tip and pressed ABC News to retract it, according to Newsmax.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary posted on X that ABC News should retract its news story since it was based on a single unconfirmed tip sent to California law enforcement.

Leavitt also wrote, “TO BE CLEAR: No such threat from Iran to our homeland exists, and it never did.”

California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom said there was no looming menace to the state, but officials were taking the threat genuinely and getting ready for worst-case situations.

In addition, the Associated Press reported that an alert by the FBI said the information was unverified and showed no more details on timing, targets, method, or perpetrators. Trump said Wednesday that the matter was being investigated.

Initially, ABC had reported on an FBI alert that said Iran allegedly sought to carry out an attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from a vessel off the West Coast against indeterminate targets in California if the United States struck Iran.

Reuters later reported that the alert was based on one unverified tip sent in an email to local law enforcement, and that President Donald Trump said Wednesday he was not worried about Iranian retaliation on U.S. soil.
