The election integrity measure known as the SAVE America Act is on the line – and the US Senate must use the talking filibuster in order for it to pass.
The bill is straightforward and concise, and would establish the following:
US Senator Mike Lee explained that senators must be prepared to show up for the filibuster in order to secure this common-sense election integrity bill. “The convenience of senators has become the enemy of liberty and good government,” he wrote. “Time to turn that around. We must make filibustering senators speak—even through long nights, weekends, and long-scheduled recesses. We’ve become addicted to easy, predictable schedules. No more!”
Democrats intend to filibuster the SAVE America Act, but there are two ways to break that filibuster: 1) obtaining 60 votes to end it (cloture – not likely), or, 2) by forcing Democrats to keep up the filibuster, wearing them down, which requires Republican Senators to be present and force the filibuster to continue.
This “talking filibuster” is the method that enabled the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Public polls consistently find that voter ID laws are extremely popular across party lines, ranging from 75-90% of the electorate.
John Yep, President of Catholics for Catholics, is strongly urging citizens to call their US Senator and Senate Majority Leader John Thune to urge them to commit to this talking filibuster to make sure the SAVE America Act passes.
“A true democratic republic requires safe and secure elections,” Yep said. “We must pray for the passage of the SAVE America Act, but it is also critical to take action. Please take the time to call your senator’s office TODAY and urge them to use the talking filibuster to save this common-sense election integrity bill that is for all Americans.”
