Life, indeed, is worth living.
Venerable Fulton J. Sheen, one of America’s greatest preachers and television and radio personalities, is poised to be beatified on Thursday, September 24, 2026, in St. Louis, Missouri.
According to a story by Vatican News, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization, will say the beatification Mass, in representation of Pope Leo XIV.
The future Blessed Fulton Sheen was famous for his vigorous preaching, especially on television and radio.
His fame was also recognized by the non-Catholic media like Time Magazine (then one of the most respected and read publications in the country), which featured Sheen on the cover as ‘Bishop Fulton Sheen: The First “Televangelist.”
“His Excellency the Most Reverend Fulton J. Sheen, auxiliary Bishop of New York, perhaps the most famous preacher in the U.S., certainly America’s best-known Roman Catholic priest, and the newest star of U.S. television” wrote Time Magazine, according to a post by Catholics for Catholics.
According to Catholics for Catholics, Sheen “was and he continues to be a true legend! The American Catholic Church rejoices with the news of his beatification.”
Venerable Sheen was also known as a deep thinker who predicted most of today’s social and spiritual ills in comments like the following:
“America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance — it is not. It is suffering from tolerance. Tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded.”

In 2012, Pope Benedict XVI declared Sheen as Venerable. In 2019, Pope Francis authorized a decree recognizing a miracle through his intercession.
This recognition cleared Archbishop Sheen for beatification, after which he will have the title “Blessed.”
Born in El Paso, Illinois, on May 8, 1895, to an Irish family, Sheen discovered his vocation to the priesthood at the age of 24 and was ordained in 1919.
By 1951 Sheen began hosting a weekly television series, “Life is Worth Living,” on matters of faith that attracted some 30 million viewers. On Dec. 9, 1979, he died in New York at the age of 84.
