One of the pilots who died during a LaGuardia Airport crash was a 30-year-old man from Quebec who loved flying so much that he learned English to increase his chances at a career in aviation.

“He flew his first plane when he was 16 years old,” grieving Jeannette Gagnier told the Toronto Star on Monday of her tragic great-nephew, Antoine Forest.

“He was always taking courses and flying. He never stopped,” Gagnier said, according to The New York Post.

Some harrowing footage from LaGuardia Airport in New York captured the moment that Air Canada Express flight AC8646 crashed into a fire truck late Sunday night.

The Bombardier CRJ-900 is a fairly small jet that seats 76–90 and is used for commuter travel, according to The Daily Wire. The aircraft collided into a Port Authority fire truck; two pilots, including Forest, were killed and more than a dozen passengers were injured in the collision.

As a line of emergency vehicles with flashing lights approached at right angles to the plane, the video shows the plane going down the runway. The plane crashes into the first vehicle in that line and makes a grinding halt.

According to several reports, the Bombardier Jet was landing at the time of the crash and had already slowed to about 30 miles per hour before hitting the fire truck.

According to The Wire, the fire truck and the other emergency vehicles behind it were heading to take charge of another problem at LaGuardia at the time and had been given the green light to cross the runway. But audio recordings from Air Traffic Control hinted of a mix-up that resulted in both the plane and the fire truck arriving at the intersection at the same time.

“Stop! Stop! Fire #1 Stop!” the controller could be heard saying.

After the crash, one controller could be heard saying that he “messed up.”

“No man, you did the best you could,” another replied.
