The military draft may do a comeback.
According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, President Donald Trump is conserving his “options on the table” in the middle of the intensifying war in Iran.
Maria Bartiromo, host of Fox Business’ Sunday Morning Futures, queried Leavitt about the possibility of Americans not enlisted in the U.S. military being required to fight overseas.
“Mothers out there are worried that we’re going to have a draft, that they’re going to see their sons and daughters get involved in this,” Bartiromo said. “What do you want to say about the president’s plans for troops on the ground? As we know, it’s been largely an air campaign up until now.”
“It has been, and it will continue to be,” Leavitt replied. “President Trump wisely does not remove options off of the table. I know a lot of politicians like to do that quickly, but the president as commander in chief wants to continue to assess the success of this military operation.”
According to Fox News, as part of the annual National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the House of Representatives approved a measure in 2024 to automatically register men aged 18 to 26 for the Selective Service.
Karoline Leavitt doesn’t rule out a draft.

A draft has not been implemented in over 50 years since the Vietnam War, but federal law still dictates that almost all male U.S. citizens and immigrants register upon turning 18 or face felony charges.
Still, because the draft remains dormant, it would require express authorization from both Congress and the president to be reestablished during a national emergency.
While it hasn’t been invoked in over half a century, it’s mandatory for all male U.S. citizens to register for the selective service, also known as the military draft, when they turn 18. Failure to register is classified as a felony and comes with a host of legal challenges.
